Agency and Existence

I have often thought that D&C 93 is one of the deeper parts of the scriptures. I remember thinking when I was in college what it would be like to be in a philosophy class somewhere NOT BYU and start quoting from that section during discussions of truth.

Sunday I was reading that section again (parts of it anyway), and the following thought came to mind. Make of it what you will.

All truth is independent in that sphere in which God has placed it, to act for itself, as all intelligence also; otherwise there is no existence.
(verse 30).

Therefore, Satan's plan, which would make intelligence dependent and unable to act for itself (as we would all just be doing whatever he wanted us to) was a plan for non-existence.

I know that I used to interpret things that in the council of heaven Lucifer came up with a plan, it was rejected, and so he got made and decided to, more or less, take his ball and go home. But the more I understand about how things really work, the more I realize that he knew his plan was impossible, unworkable, and would in no way help anyone other than himself. In other words, rather than rebelling because his plan wasn't acceptable, his plan WAS a rebellion. The amazing thing is that he was able to talk 1/3 of the hosts of heaven into going for his plan that would leave them with nothing. But I guess that just shows how good of a talker he was.

Another thought, that I just had while writing this. It would appear from the verse quoted that truth is itself able to act, and has agency. Not sure of the implications of that, but it's something perhaps to think about.

Maybe that follows on the idea of Curt that maybe particles have free will?

I had to give a talk on Choice & Accountability recently and was thinking about some of those same things. It becomes clear that Satan's plan was impossible--and that there could be no existence without truth and agency. Interesting to ponder.
